3 Ways to Fix Your Pet's Bad Behavior

As I have said before, our pets are like our children, so here are a few tips on how to fix that bad behavior.

If your pet has accidents in the house:

Potential cause: Medical or behavioral problems

    • The fix: See the vet to rule out or treat diabetes, a urinary tract infection or other issues. If nothing turns up, institute a structured bathroom schedule to make behavioral corrections. Take dogs out to the same spot every one to two hours. Keep cats' litter boxes clean and easily accessible.

If your pet tears up furniture:

    • Potential cause: Stress or boredom

The fix: Give your pup a sturdy chew toy to gnaw on. Encourage your cat to claw at a scratching post instead of totally banishing the behavior. Discourage felines from clawing furniture by covering the areas they usually go for with tinfoil or plastic wrap.

If your pet is too rough at playtime:

Potential cause: Boredom or attention seeking

    • The fix: When your pooch nips or jumps, yelp so it knows you've been hurt, then turn away. The dog will start to associate roughness with the end of playtime. Try stimulating games such as fetch, plus interactive food puzzles. With cats, keep plenty of toys handy to redirect their attention.

    BONUS:

    • Chew on this: Gnawing is actually a normal, healthy behavior for dogs.

Your goal: To tire out your pup with plenty of active playtime. Aim for 30 minutes daily.

Household Items You Don't Clean (But Should)

    Bed Pillows

Wash them: Most pillows can be machine-washed and –dried; check the label. Set the washer on the gentle cycle, and wash in hot water using a mild liquid detergent (powder and leave residue). Wash two regular-size pillows together to balance the load (king-size ones should go one at a time). Run pillows through the rinse cycle twice.

Dry them: Place pillows in the dryer along with two clean tennis balls, and set on low heat. Polyester- or cotton-filled pillows take one to two hours to dry; down requires two to three hours, sometimes longer. To prevent overheating, remove the pillow regularly, fluff and return.

Check for dryness: It’s imperative to dry down pillows completely to prevent mold and mildew from growing. After two hours, remove them from the dryers, let cool, then squeeze several spots on the pillows between two fingers. If there is any moistness or clumps, return them to the dryer.

Clean: Every three to six months.

    Washer and Dryer

Wipe out bacteria: Hot water (between 140ºF and 150°F) and bleach is the only way to kill germs. Washing a load of whites in hot water and chlorine bleach sanitizes the machine.

Take extra precaution: Once a month, run an empty load with hot water and bleach to sanitize the basin and wipe out any lingering germs.

Clean: With each load of whites.

    Dishwasher

Disinfect it: Pour vinegar into a dishwasher-safe cup, then place the cup upright on an empty dishwasher’s top rack. Run a full cycle, using the hot-water setting. Next, deodorize the machine by sprinkling a cup of baking soda on the bottom of the tub and running the dishwasher on a half-cycle with hot water. Leave your dishwasher door open for a few hours after to air it out.

When you see mold and mildew: Pour ½ to 1 cup of bleach into the bottom of the dishwasher and run a full cycle. For stainless-steel interiors, use vinegar and baking soda.

    Clean: Once a month.

    Computers

De-crumb your desktop model:Start by disconnecting your keyboard and mouse. Remove dust and debris by brushing the keys with a soft-bristled paintbrush or computer cleaning brush, or suck up the dirt with the brush hose attachments on the vacuum. You also can use compressed air to blow out small particles. To disinfect, pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol onto a clean rag and wipe down the keys and mouse. (Do not saturate the rag or keys). For deep crevices, use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol.

Tackle your laptop: Turn off the unit, and unplug and remove such items as a USB port hub and an external mouse; then follow the steps for desktop computers.

    Clean: Once a month.

    Your Purse

For vinyl or plastic bags: Wipe away germs with a disinfecting wipe.

For leather bags: Use alcohol-free baby wipes. (Test the wipe first on an inconspicuous spot to make sure it doesn’t leave a stain or darken the material).

For cotton bags: Machine- or hand-wash in hot water and air dry.

    Clean: Weekly

    Sink and Drain

Sanitize it: Every evening, wipe down the entire sink, drain and strainer basket with a disinfecting wipe. Place the strainer in the dishwasher weekly.

Clear the drain: Once a month, pour 1 cup of bleach down the drain, then flush with hot water. Don’t use bleach if you have a septic system; instead, pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain followed by a cup of vinegar, then rinse with a pot of boiling water.

Stop using ultrasound to determine sex of fetuses, urge doctors, radiologists

Canada’s pregnancy specialists and the nation’s radiologists are calling for a halt on using ultrasound for the sole purpose of determining the sex of a fetus.

In a new joint policy statement, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and the Canadian Association of Radiologists also say it could be considered unethical for private, commercial clinics to offer “entertainment” ultrasounds purely for the purpose of creating “keepsake” videos for expectant parents.

The position statement comes amid mounting concerns that in Canada, people are using ultrasound to determine the sex of a fetus early in pregnancy and to have it aborted if it is a girl.

The Harper government condemned gender-selection abortions at the party’s convention in November, while Canada’s leading medical journal has urged medical licensing bodies across the country to rule that doctors should not reveal the sex of the fetus to any woman before about 30 weeks of pregnancy “when an unquestioned abortion is all but impossible.”

The Canadian Medical Association Journal, in an editorial published in 2012, said research in Canada has found the strongest evidence of sex selection among people from India, China, Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines.

“What this means is that many couples who have two daughters and no son selectively get rid of female fetuses until they can ensure that their third-born child is a boy.”

In Canada, abortions are rarely performed after 24 weeks of pregnancy.

“Fetal ultrasound is a valuable tool in modern obstetrical care,” the position statement reads. The scans use sound waves to monitor a baby’s growth and development in the womb.

But the widespread availability of ultrasounds for purchase “has led to a proliferation of ‘entertainment’ ultrasound units throughout Canada,” and there have been media reports of private clinics offering sex determination in the first trimester of pregnancy.

While no definitive proof exists that the high-frequency, low-energy sound waves emitted by ultrasounds can cause fetal abnormalities, recent studies in animals have reported subtle effects on the development of the fetal brain, the authors write.

Commercial, for-profit clinics are offering special packages that include three- and four-dimensional ultrasound pictures and videos of babies in the womb, cellphone ringtones of a baby’s fetal heartbeat and live broadcasting to family and friends.

The concern is that the machines may be used for as long as an hour to get a video of the fetus. The fetus may be exposed to unnecessarily high energy levels for prolonged periods, and those operating the machines may be poorly trained to recognize abnormalities, according to the position statement.
That could lead to “false reassurance to the patient that everything is ‘normal.’ ”

“The fetus should not be exposed to ultrasound for commercial and entertainment purposes, and it could be considered unethical to perform these scans,” the new and updated joint policy statement from the obstetricians and radiologists reads.

The technology should also never be used “for the sole purpose of determining fetal gender without a medical indication for that scan,” the groups say.

Alla Boulavkina, a registered diagnostic medical sonographer and owner of Tri-Cities 3D Sono Image in Vancouver, which offers non-medical fetal ultrasounds, said the scans improve bonding between parents and babies, and that she limits exposure times. “I know how to do it correctly.”

Boulavkina offers gender determination, starting at 20 weeks’ gestation only. Demand for the service, she said, is growing.

“Everybody wants to know, ‘boy or girl?’ Not just to start shopping … it takes time to be mentally ready for the baby,” she said.

“It’s very important to know. It helps people to prepare and be happy. Because sometimes daddy wanted a boy, and then he sees girl, and he’s not happy, and it’s no good for the family. In this case, it gives time to slowly be prepared.”

However, “We strictly never, ever tell” before 20 weeks into the pregnancy, she said.
Abortion services are available in B.C. up to 20 weeks’ gestation.

Pennsylvania Couple Sent To Prison For 2nd Prayer Death

PHILADELPHIA — A couple who believed in faith-healing were sentenced Wednesday to 3½ to seven years in prison in the death of a second child who never saw a doctor despite being stricken with pneumonia.
Herbert and Catherine Schaible defied a court order to get medical care for their children after their 2-year-old son, Kent, died in 2009. Instead, they tried to comfort and pray over 8-month-old Brandon last year as he, too, died of treatable pneumonia.

“My religious beliefs are that you should pray, and not have to use medicine. But because it is against the law, then whatever sentence you give me, I will accept,” Catherine Schaible, 44, told the judge. She added that her beliefs have since changed.
The Schaibles are third-generation members of an insular Pentecostal community, the First Century Gospel Church in northeast Philadelphia, where they also taught at the church school. They have seven surviving children.
Judge Benjamin Lerner rejected defense claims that their religious beliefs “clashed” with the 2011 court order to get annual checkups and call a doctor if a child became ill. The order came after a jury convicted them of involuntary manslaughter in Kent’s death, and they were sentenced to 10 years of probation.
“April of 2013 wasn’t Brandon’s time to die,” Lerner said, noting the violence committed throughout human history in the name of religion. “You’ve killed two of your children. … Not God. Not your church. Not religious devotion. You.”
Experts say about a dozen U.S. children die in faith-healing cases each year.
The Schaibles are the rare couple to lose a second child that way. Their pastor, Nelson Clark, blamed Kent’s death on a “spiritual lack” in the parents’ lives, and insisted they would never seek medical care, even if another child was dying.
“It was so foreseeable to me that this was going to happen,” said Assistant District Attorney Joanne Pescatore, who prosecuted both cases. “Everybody in the system failed these children.”
After the first death, she and public defender Mythri Jayaraman agreed that the couple’s beliefs were so ingrained that their children remained at risk. They asked the earlier judge to have the family supervised by a Department of Human Services caseworker. Instead, the judge assigned them to probation officers, who are not trained to monitor children’s welfare.
Pescatore has called Brandon’s symptoms “eerily similar” to Kent’s. They included labored breathing and a refusal to eat.
In his police statement last year, Herbert Schaible, 45, said, “We believe in divine healing, that Jesus shed blood for our healing and that he died on the cross to break the devil’s power.”
The Schaibles pleaded no contest to third-degree murder in Brandon’s death, and faced a maximum 20- to 40-year term. Pescatore asked for eight to 16 years, while Jayaraman sought less than two years for Catherine Schaible.
“I didn’t know what to do when Brandon was sick, because it was much quicker,” said Catherine Schaible, who said he died within a few days. “The D.A. is actually right. I feel like I failed as a mother because they’re not alive.”
Herbert Schaible has already served about a year, while his wife has been free on bail.
A videotape played in court showed her on a weekly supervised visit, when she brought her children their favorite meals, along with games and birthday treats. Six of them are now in foster care, some with relatives. They attend public schools for the first time, and are getting medical, dental and vision care. Several now wear glasses.
The oldest child, who is 18, sat in court with his grandparents, the family pastor and other supporters. They listened as Herbert Schaible’s lawyer called the patriarch “a good man, a righteous man, a spiritual man.”

“He’s still grieving the loss of his two sons,” lawyer Bobby Hoof said.
